Could somebody who is pretty knowledgeable on all things Sherlock Holmes help me out?

I’ve read a few of the Sherlock Holmes books, but the only book, that I’ve read, in which Irene Adler is present is “A Scandal In Bohemia”. I know that in the recent Sherlock films with Robert Downey Jr. , Irene is shown to be romantically/sexually involved with Sherlock, however in the book she’s only really shown as a woman who managed to defeat him. I was just wondering if she becomes something romantic? Or wether in the BBC Sherlock she will be portrayed as a romantic/sexual character for Sherlock? Just wondering because in the books and BBC Sherlock, it seems a bit out of character for him to have any form of love interest.
